Your first freshwater aquarium

A stable aquarium starts before the fish arrive. Plan around the animal’s adult size, not how small it looks in the shop.

  1. Choose the homeConfirm adult size, tank capacity, lid requirements and a level, load-rated stand.
  2. Match the equipmentUse filtration rated for the full water volume and a heater only when the species requires one.
  3. Cycle before stockingUse a test kit to follow ammonia and nitrite, then add compatible livestock gradually.

Filtration

Clear water starts with the right filter

Match flow and media capacity to the real aquarium volume, stocking level and animals. Bigger flow is not always better for bettas, shrimp or axolotls.

Choose

  • Check the manufacturer’s tank-volume rating.
  • Use gentle or intake-protected flow for delicate animals.
  • Leave room for biological filter media.

Maintain

  • Rinse reusable media in removed aquarium water.
  • Do not replace every media layer at the same time.
  • Investigate cloudiness instead of only adding chemicals.
Weekly care

Clean the tank without tearing it apart

Small, regular maintenance is safer and easier than waiting for a complete reset. Keep beneficial bacteria established and disturb fish as little as possible.

1. TestCheck water before deciding how much needs changing.
2. SiphonRemove debris from reachable gravel without stripping the whole base.
3. WipeClean viewing glass and work around plants and hardscape.
4. RefillUse conditioned water at a suitable temperature.
Planted tanks

Start with forgiving aquarium plants

Anubias and Java fern are useful starting points. Attach their rhizomes to suitable rock or wood instead of burying them, then keep lighting consistent.

Keep it simple

  • Choose aquarium-safe hardscape and substrate.
  • Leave swimming room and access for cleaning.
  • Begin with a repeatable lighting schedule.

Adjust slowly

  • Watch new plant growth and algae levels.
  • Change one condition at a time.
  • Check light suitability before purchasing.
